Hunters
|
Strongest of the Surveillance Team
|
The Surveillance Team was the only department in the Hunters Association to employ a large number of powerful hunters. Since it was the department responsible for managing and supervising hunters, it was the natural place for high-ranking hunters to wind up.
The department head Woo Jinchul was also its strongest member. With his serious personality and methodical mind, he quickly gained chairman Go Gunhee's trust. But he had a problem.
B-Rank Hunters, Kang Taeshik.
No matter how organized Woo Jinchul was, he had no way of guessing the chaos Kang Taeshik would carry out behind the scenes.
Everyone who met him said the same thing: it was impossible to read Kang Taeshik.
Kang Taeshik's eyes were as deep as an abyss, and the longer you looked into them, the more you felt like you were being sucked into a distant, alien place.

|
Survivors of That Fateful Day
|
They would never forget that day.
The wide, domed room and its almost-sacred aura. The torches that lined the walls and spat flame of their own accord. The statue and its merciless eyes, lying in wait...
And more than anything else, the weighty guilt of leaving the blood-soaked bodies of their fallen comrades behind, including the very person that gave them the chance to escape... Sung Jinwoo. The Weakest Hunter of All Mankind."

|
Can't See Eye-to-Eye
|
It was impossible to go any further.
Nam Chae-Young had answered the Hunters Association's emergency call and had arrived at the site of a Dungeon Break, but she knew that there was nothing she could do but buy time. It didn't make sense to fight a boss with hunters she'd never even seen before, let alone worked with.
The only hunter she knew she could rely on was Lee Joohee, a B-Rank healer. A B-Rank healer is a rare teammate to have, and Joohee stood a good chance of joining a major guild.
However, When Chae-Young called out to her, Joohee's face was stricken with a look of terror.
What had happened to her?
Thought she couldn't fathom what could cause such fear in a person, Chae-Young felt pity for Joohee as she looked into her trembling eyes.

White Tiger Guild
|
The White Tiger Guild is named after the White Tiger, one of the Four Gods and the animal protector of the West.
Baek Yoonho was a founding member of the Fiend Guild and contributed to its early growth.
However, disagreements over the guild's growth and how to split profits led to tension with fellow founder Lim Tae-Gyu. Lim tae-Gyu wanted to grow the guild even more, and Yoonho wanted to share more of their profits with the existing members.
They couldn't see eye to eye, so Yoonho took his followers and founded the White Tiger Guild.
At present, the White Tiger Guild is one of the Five Major Guilds in Korea, and Baek Yoonho is said to keep quite busy training his less-experienced guild members so they can uphold its reputation.
|
|
Hunters Guild
|
Hunters is a guild founded by Choi Jong-In, an S-Rank hunter known as the "The Ultimate Hunter."
Although it was the last of the Five Major Guilds to be established, it is now the largest guild in Korea.
The Hunters Guild was able to grow at a remarkable pace largely because it had two large S-Rank hunters, including the Vice Guild Master, Cha Hae-In.
Many people questioned why Hae-In didn't start a new guild of her own. After all, she was at least as powerful as Choi Jong-In, if not more powerful.
It's simple. She's shy. As someone uncomfortable with public speaking, she felt at ease in her position as Vice Guild Master.
Rumor has it that she chose to join the Hunters Guild for no other reason than the commute being the shortest.

Living Weapons
|
For hunters, your weapon is your life.
The better the weapon you use, the higher your chance of surviving a dungeon.
And there's no greater weapon than your own strength. No matter how powerful an expensive weapon purports to be, it can be dulled, chipped, or broken.
But for a hunter who uses their fists, their weapons will remain intact for as long as they do.

|
Trust Me
|
Hunters with the rare power of healing are often thought to be the "chosen ones."
They heal fighters and protect injured hunters like they have a special divine mission. But that can be a lot of pressure. Lee Joohee, unable to recover from the trauma she experienced in the Double Dungeon, decided to retire after clearing the D-Rank gate she participated in with Kang Taeshik.
Min Byung-Gu, the only S-Rank healer in Korea, retired following the trauma of the Jeju Island Raid. Many people criticized him, but Lee Joohee understood Min Byun-Gu's feelings all too well.
After Joohee had returned to civilian life, she saw Byung-Gu's return on live TV, as he joined the latest Jeju Island Raid.
His dark eyes trembled, though his expression was determined. As he steeled his will, his look erased all doubt from Joohee's mind. She knew what she had to do.
Joohee joined him and the two healers fulfilled their chosen mission once more.

Survivors of the Bitter Cold
|
In the biting cold, inches from death, the mere fact that you're not alone is a source of strength.
To tell the truth, Park Heejin wasn't very interested in the E-Rank hunters attending the New Hunter training.
However, when it became clear she might be facing her final battle, she instinctively looked for someone strong.
That's when an E-Rank hunter named Sung Jinwoo caught her attention. And next to him, she saw a little girl who was pretending to be brave despite shaking like a leaf.
Having no choice but to put both of their lives in someone else's hands, Heejin felt a strong connection to Han Song-Yi.
When they both survived, they continued meeting up. Though their friendship could have been a constant reminder of the hardship they had faced, it instead became a reminder of their shared strength.
|
|
Sacrifice
|
Most hunters' motivation can be broken down into either a need for money or a sense of duty, and most low-ranking hunters in the Hunters Association fall strictly into the former category.
Their shared fates changed that day in the Double Dungeon, the survivors enter another dungeon and hunter together once more.
They all had their excuses they told themselves, but... really, they needed the money.
If they hadn't, would they have entered the Double Dungeon?
Sometimes, they think back on that day. If they had the chance to go back and do it all again, would they have made the same choices?

Magic Guardians
|
Mage-type awakened beings usually wield fire or light.
Compared to physical-type awakened beings, magic and support-types are relatively few in number, so they're treated favorably regardless of rank.
The sight of one summoning a spurt of flames or burst of light to instantly destroy a magic beast is as dazzling as a fireworks show.
However, their abilities really "shine" when lighting the way in a dark dungeon, and a mage-type hunter is invaluable when it comes to wayfinding or scouting ahead.
|
|
In the Spider's Lair
|
Almost immedaitely, Yoo Jinho felt something was off in the C-Rank dungeon he'd joined as a party-filler. Jo Kyuhwan and Hwang Dongsuk kept exchanging shady glances when they thought no one was looking.
Jinho was pretty sure that they were planning to steal the profits from the essence stones.
The dungeon promised to a big payday - but that payday meant nothing if the money wasn't divided equally.
Unable to ignore his suspicions, Jinho involved the hunters' contracts and accused them of being underhanded.
Too late, Jinho realized that there were people in the world who were crueler and more vicious than he had ever imagined.
Unfortantely, he only made that discovery as they "cut ties" with him.

Sword Wielders
|
A hunter's rank equal the respect they garner.
In that way, it is much like wealth. Hunters know the pecking order and treat those with a lower rank than themselves as inferior. Age or life circumstances don't matter - only ranks do.
However, all that can change if a hunter really knows how to utilize their abilities. Even a low-ranking mage, for example, can really "shine" when lighting the way in a dark dungeon, wayfinding, or scouting ahead.
As a result, the person Hae-In respects the most is her kendo teacher, Song Chiyul.
As a C-Rank hunter, Chiyul worried tht it was inappropriate for him to teach kendo to an S-Rank like Hae-In. He even secretly moved his dojo in an attempt to dissuade her.
However, Hae-In was undaunted and tracked dowon his new dojo to ask him to teach her. Impressed by her unyielding passion, Song Chiyul agreed to train Cha Hae-In.

Korean's S-Rank Hunters
|
The "S" in S-Rank hunter is widely used to mean "special," but while it appears to be an official rank, it actually means the hunter's rank cannot be accurately measured.
Because S-Rank hunters hold so much social influence, most information about them is kept secret. That secrecy allows rumors to spread until it's hard to tell truth from exaggeration.
For example, according to rumors, when Choi Jong-In uses his fire magic, the results are stronger than a bomb, so he's the nickname "The Ultimate Hunter."
The rumors also say that Baek Yoonho transforms into a monster when danger is near. When that happens, it's time to clear the area as quickly as possible.

|
Breadwinners
|
Though it's not always the case, most of the time, hunters form the Hunters Association feel like they're in over their heads.
It was steady work for steady pay, but compared to what hunters in the major guilds could make, it was pocket change.
And factoring in the pricec for putting one's life on the line... it wasn't very much money at all.
But no major guild anywhere would ever recruit a low-ranked hunter.
That was the situation Kim Sangshik and Park Beom-Shik found themselves in.
They wanted to join a major guild and be well-compensated for their work, but...
Sometimes, it was safer for low-ranked people to not become hunters at all.
But Sangshik and Beom-Shik both chose to risk it.
They needed the money to support their families.
The pressure to provide for their households led them to the battlefield time and time again.

Blood Ties
|
These brothers had an unhappy life
Orphaned at a young age and raised in poverty, they turned to crime and vandalism as they lashed out at the world.
As their distrust for the world deepened, the brother grew more and more cruel, and they never felt guilt for their actions. Withe very heinous act, their brotherly bond grew tighter and tighter.
Until one awakened as an S-Rank... and the other as a C-Rank.

Foreign Hunters
|
The Justitia Guild\'s mission is to protect the people of France from magic beasts and maintain order.
However, Alicia Blanche and Emma Laurent had another secret goal: to find the culprit behind the "Raid Break" that had devasted France years prior - and holding that villain accountable.
Although they first met as rivals, the two teamed up to bring the criminal to justice. Until then, they were willing to raid together.
And when that day finally comes, they'll have each other to help them find a new purpose in life.

|
Nineteen Raids
|
Dungeons can take many different forms.
You never know where you'll end up once you pass through the next flickering blue gateway.
The depth, the temperature... Not a single thing can be predicted.
Despite the uncertainty. Yoo Jinho and Han Song-Yi entered nineteen gates without hesitation because they had faith in Sung Jinwoo.
|
|
Unconditional Faith
|
When Baek Yoonho left the Fiend Guild and founded the White Tiger Guild, Min Byung-Gu followed him without hesitation.
It wasn't surprising. Yoonho was a good man who valued rewarding the guild members for their hard work more than the growth of the guild.
And Min Byung-Gu had already been keeping an eye on Yoonho for a long time.
Even when his intimidating form had scared everyone else away, Byung-Gu would happily joke around with Yoonho.
Yoonho didn't easily open his heart to others, but seemed to have unconditionally accepted Min Byung-Gu as a friend.
And when Byung-Gu decided to retire after the first Jeju Island Raid, Yoonho was the only one to respect his decision. He knew what it had done to Byung-Gu's bleeding heart better than anyone.
|
|
Multifactored
|
There are some top-ranking hunters with utterly unique powers. Baek Yoonho is a prime example of this.
Baek Yoonho has an ability called Beast Transformation. Like the name suggests, it allows him to transform his body into a beast-like form, a power which proved to be extremely effective in intimidating his enemies.
However, Baek Yoonho never really liked his ability. He is always keenly aware that people will look at him differently when they see him in this form.
Of course, he knows their fear is reasonable. But that doesn't make it any less painful to be seen as a monster. As a result, he tends to refrain from using his full transformation...
...And keeps people at arm's length, preventing them from seeing his more vulnerable side.
|
|
Bow Wielders
|
When people awaken, they can't pick which sort of weapons their powers are best for.
A hunter's weapons are a kind of destiny that was decided long before they gained their powers.
Though they may not choose their powers, many hunters have a preference for archery. Hunters who use bows have the advantage of being able to attack enemies from a distance.
Magic arrows have tremendous destructive power; so much so that they can kill an enemy with a single shot. The weapon can even look graceful in the middle of combat.
Of course, that all depends on whether or not the hunter is a good shot.
There are risks- arrows often miss, and enemies with highly developed senses can even catch arrows flying from afar.
|
|
Guild Masters
|
Any hunter with more than twenty raids under their belt can obtain a Guild Master's License through a simple written test. Of course, S-Rank hunters can establish a guild without a license.
Just because the process isn't that complicated doesn't mean it's easy to be a guild master.
When you become a master of a guild, you must recruit skilled hunters and manage the recruited hunters well. In a way, it's like being the CEO of a company.
That's why guild masters can't just focus on their hunter duties. They must always be on their toes, and should be very sensitive towards their guild members' needs.
The one who wears the crown must also bear the crown.
|
|
White Tiger Guild Rookies
|
Anything can happen inside a dungeon. That's what the White Tiger Guild emphasizes most when training new hunters.
Many new recruits fail to understand how unpredictable and mysterious a dungeon can be.
During the White Tiger Guild's new recruit training, an A-Rank hunter named Kim Chil garnered a lot of attention. He frequently took on a leadership role and radiated confidence.
Park Heejin wasn't fooled, though. She saw the fragile ego hiding inside.
"He's not as strong as people think," she thought.
And when facing certain danger, Heejin decided to trust her assessment and leave her life in the hands of an E-Rank stranger instead of Chul.
Show-offs are just hiding their fatal flaws instead of fixing them.

A Devastating Price
|
People sometimes confuse pride with self-esteem.
Pride is the desire for others to approve of you and think highly of you. Self-esteem is a feeling of respect and acceptance for oneself.
While pride is centered on others, self-esteem is centered on you.
Both are valuable in moderation. But inside or outside the dungeons, the cost is great when people choose to value themselves over others. To build up their self-esteem, these hunters sought to put others down.
The bigger they are, the harder they fall, and the same was true for these egotists. The dungeons became their graves.
|
|
We Are One
|
These are hunters who use summoned beasts in battle.
They summon otherworldly beings to assist them in battle using charms or y creating them whole-cloth with their mana power.
The loyalty of the summoned beasts is truly amazing.
They are willing to trample any enemy to achieve what the summoner wants.
Without mercy.
|
|
Ahjin Guild
|
The most difficult part of creating the Ahjin Guild was coming up with a name.
The Ahjin Guild was almost called the "Solo Player Guild," but avoided this arguably cringey fate thanks to Jinho's persuasion and Jinah's naming skills. All that remained was to select the founding members.
They needed someone who wasn't interested in actually participating in guild activities, but could still be trusted.
Jinho immediately knew who to fit the bill.
A certain cousin with sparkling eyes and a photogenic smile. That's how Yoo Soohyun became the last founding member of the Ahjin Guild.
And soon, another new face joined the Ahjin Guild.

There's No Set Path
|
Becoming an awakened being is special, but it isn't unique. It could happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere.
There's no age or gender requirements, so many people awaken very young. As a result, the number of Student Hunters who have left their studies behind has begun to increase.
The concerned adults in their lives said that students should be studying math, not stabbing monsters, but that just sounds like nagging. Most young hunters gladly abandon the idea of a normal high school life and a graduation.
Mirei and Han Song-Yi were two such teens. Also to understand one another's perspective better than anyone else, they quickly became close friends.
|
|
Icons of the Hunters Association
|
Becoming an awakened being means facing difficult choices. The first choice: where to turn at the crossroads of civilian life and hunting. Awakened beings who have just learned their grade are torn between the calm but boring life or the exciting but dangerous one. It's the most serious decision most of them have ever had to make.
The second choice: how to make the most of their good fortune. Those who become hunters have a chance at money or fame, but also the obligation to do their work out of the good of the heart, or a sense of duty. Ironically, though the number of paths open to them increases, the time it takes most to make their choice has decreased... probably because most of them choose money. Hunters are rumored to make a lot, after all.
But there are exceptions.
Some people do find a sense of duty rather than chasing materialistic things. Such hunters generally become Hunters Association staff, but it would be a big mistake to think that it's easy to get in. Because the Hunters Association is treated like a company, you have to work hard to get hired. Having a sense of duty is just one of the requirements.
But if you want to join the Hunters Association, why not give it a try? The Hunters Association is ready to welcome anyone willing to put in the work.

Helpers
|
There's a somewhat unusual strike squad in London, England. They always seem to appear when a brutal crime's been committed.
Some think they're immature snoops and thrill seekers, but they don't care what people say.
They only things they hold dear are their quest to bring a serial killer to justice, fulfilling their duty as protectors... and getting back the precious keepsake she took.

|
Scavenger Guild
|
Long before a new world order came to be, there were those who believe that the right to justice belong soley to those with overwhelming power. And when mana finally appeared, they banded together, as their beliefs seemed validated.
After surviving the Kamish Raid, one of the worst disasters in history, Thomas Andre earned the title "National Level Hunter" and founded the Scavenger Guild at the request of the United States government.
To make his guild the strongest it could be, Thomas recruited Korea's eighth S-Rank hunter, Hwang Dongsoo. Dongsoo left criticisms of betraying his country in his wake as he flew to the States.

|
Blade Guild
|
The moment his sword is drawn, victory is decided.
Hunters were a new source of power. To seize it, Chairman Matsumoto extended his hand out to Goto Ryuji under the guise of building a new Japan with this blessing. Ryuji drank his sweet yet deadly poison in one gulp and he started writing the prologue to this new history with two words: "truth" and "pride," which he engraved on his blade.

Two Hearts
|
Two hearts with the same pulse.
Both caught in a windfall, but one learned to share her strength, while the other moved forward alone.
One heart holds the weight of leadership, while the other carries the silent burden of isolation.
Though they resemble each other, the two divergent timelines can never meet, each version of her racing toward their own destiny.
