Secret File[]
It was the day of a blisteringly cold winter snowstorm.
She found the old and frail dragon lying wounded on the ground.
Since she couldn't bring the dragon home to help it recover, she visited it every day.
She brought it a magic potion to help with its fever, her leftover jerky to give it strength, and a pungent cream to help heal its wounds.
Whenever she headed to the sleeping dragon into the depths of the forest, arms overflowing with things, she felt a slight itch in her heart.
The girl loved it when she could sense that itch growing, ever so slightly.
The sensation would grow the closer she got to the dragon, so every day, her steps grew a little faster.
"Will he open his eyes today?"
"Did anything happen in the middle of the night?"
"Is he cold from the snowfall?"
"I should find something to cover him."
Just as she was clearing her head to march into the slumbering dragon's forest once more, it happened.
The girl heard a deep, low roar that rang throughout the snow-covered ground.
"He's awake!"
Overcome with excitement, the girl threw her belongings aside and ran towards the dragon.
But what she found was a red foot with large, sharp claws.
From that day forward, the girl could not get close enough to see the dragon's face.
Despite this, she continued to visit the dragon diligently.
She visited the dragon daily, leaving things she thought he would need.
Sometimes she left small gifts as well.
Time went on and the season of melting snow approached.
At first, the dragon showed little interest in anything. But that began to change.
His wariness melted away with the wintry ice and even his threatening demeanor became a thing of the past.
Finally, the girl mustered up the courage to approach the dragon.
They shared simple greetings at first. Then cordial remarks, and eventually, they grew close enough to share secrets that they wanted to remain hidden.
They surpassed friendship and became family.
The girl's home was once unable to keep out the cold, but was now, it was filled with warmth. And the once-lonely forest now rang with laughter.
The girl never imagined she would have a family, and she wished with all her heart that this happiness would last.
But it was too much to hope for.
Those who did not want the girl to be happy stole what was most precious to her.
She closed her eyes and wrapped her arms around the dragon's neck as it gasped for air one last time.
The fierce heat from the blaze burning through the forest spread to their home, but the girl did not run away.
The dragon's eyelids flickered open weakly. He shielded the girl's body with his wing and let out a low cry.
"Child, there's something you must do."
"I know you're just trying to make me leave. No! I'm not going anywhere!"
"If you love me, please listen."
The dragon whispered to her of all the places she could see across the many, many worlds.
There were so many worlds that a lifetime of travel still would not allow her to visit them all.
The flames finally dwindled enough to create a path, and just as the dragon wished, and the girl left her home.
In her hand was one of his red scales.
As the girl became a speck in the distance, the old dragon let out a long, final breath.
He had lived a life of battle filled with an unassailable rage.
It had been a storied life, but a meaningless one.
But lying there and having lost it all, he finally understood what it was for.
"Now that it's done, I have no regrets..."
"...save not being able to see my little girl grow up."
Behind his closed eyes, he could see the stars he and the girl used to watch together.
"I'll see you there, child."
The dragon whispered a promise that couldn't be kept, and fell into a long slumber.
