Dossier[]
Dossier #01: "Heaven Beyond the Sky"[]
Many hunters have impressive powers, and some even seem out of this world. But only one had powers that seemed beyond even that, earning him the nickname the "Heaven Beyond the Sky."
Go Gunhee, the chairman of the Korean Hunters Association.
His shoulders were always straight, despite his old age and heavy burdens he carried.
He was deemed a National Level Hunter.
Although he's no longer embarrassed by such accolades, he didn't dream of such things as a younger man.
Words like "awakening" and "hunter" weren't in his vocabulary.
Before becoming a warrior, he was the image of a self-made man. He had built a successful company from the ground up. It was certainly an achievement worth boasting about, but he somehow felt like he had lost himself to it. He was no longer "Go Gunhee," he was "the picture of a successful businessman."
For that reason, he turned down a publisher's suggestion to write an autobiography about his life.
"Can I tell people my story when the ending is so dissatisfying."
He worried that when his life flashed before his eyes, the only things he would see were the regrets and things he had missed rather than the things he achieved.
He felt sorry for not being there for his family. He felt badly about not being able to repay his staff for their dedication.
But what he regretted the most was not taking care of himself.
Canceling his holidays to review documents left scars in the form of wrinkles, and with each passing year, the stress compounded until it became heart disease.
He had had enough.
After politely declining the publisher's offer, he decided to prepare for his retirement.
Dossier #02: Unplanned[]
The world had other plans.
The first gates shook the world and left his plans in ruins.
It happened one afternoon when he was preparing for his upcoming retirement.
He was putting some final signatures down when he felt something strange.
Something in his chest, but clearly different from a heart attack...
CRACK!
He heard a splitting sound.
There was a crack in the solid marble desktop.
Smoke-like dust rose around Go Gunhee.
"Are you hurt anywhere?!" His secretary hollered, frantically trying to sort out the situation. The security team arrived after hearing the loud noise. They were left speechless by the sight before them.
"I'm fine," Go Gunhee laughed. Even as he smiled at them, the unknown power was still swirling inside him.
Go Gunhee realized...
He had awakened.
Rumor has it that the crack on the marble tabletop that broke when Go Gunhee awakened looks exactly like the shape of his signature.
And the legend continues to say that the table is still stored somewhere in the basement of the Hunters Association.
Dossier #03: The Most Brilliant Power[]
Just because you've been evaluated as an awakened being doesn't mean you have to become a hunter. Many people chose to live an ordinary life.
Gunhee considered this a dozen times over while looking at his wife's worried expressions.
But the Greatest Fragment of Brilliant Light hidden within him had a greater influence. He gave up his peaceful life and became a hunter.
He firmly believed that there had to be a good reason why a tired old man would gain such power.
And so began the second act of Go Gunhee's life.
He had a job to do, and he delt with magic beasts time and time again where he was needed.
However, there were no grades in those days. Hunters had to gamble with their lives each time they went to fight magic beasts, unaware what kind of risk they were taking.
And even if you succeed ten times, one failure could mean death.
Countless hunters died because of that one fatal mistake.
Gunhee too was feeling a bit overwhelmed by the risks.
Human aging didn't stop, even with the power of mana.
His heart disease was getting worse.
Dossier #04: Something Only I Can Do[]
On an unuslaly clear day, a young hunter visited GO Gunhee, fresh out of high school and eager to earn money for his college tuition.
Hunting was his first job. Gunhee wanted to tell him he needed a broader worldly experience but remained quiet.
He felt it was his duty to respect the young man's decision.
The young hunter died. He would regret not sending the young man away for the rest of his life.
"No more of us should be sacrificed."
That day, Gunhee felt the desperate need for a proper system.
He soon realized that no one else was going to step up. The responsibility for creating it fell squarely on him.
He retired from the field and immediately established the Korean Hunters Association with the primary purpose of protecting the hunters.
They needed to reduce casualties.
To do that, a solid system to assess and manage the gates was needed.
Gunhee designed one based on his knowledge as a businessman and experience as a hunter.
Thanks to his decisive action, the chaos gradually fell into stability.
The gates, which had once felt like an ongoing natural disaster, become a manageable part of life.
Dossier #05: The Korean Hunters Association[]
Humans are adaptable creatures.
As gates became more common, people became eager to test the boundaries and explore.
Once they learned how to handle the gates, they started digging deeper into them.
It wasn't before long they discovered that gates were treasure troves.
Scavengers caught on quickly.
Several large-scale incidents followed, such as the looting of Essence Stones and unauthorized occupations of gates. Society fell into chaos once again.
Gunhee decided to further strengthen the Hunters Association's influence in order to restore order.
He started working closely with the government to monitor the awakened beings to ensure they wouldn't use their powers for evil.
The government soon realized that traditional laws and institutions weren't enough to govern the new superpowered world, and they gave Gunhee more power in turn.
As the concept of guilds took hold and certain guilds grew in size with enormous financial power, the influence of the Hunters Association never diminished. Rather, it was the counterbalance to the guilds to prevent power from being concentrated in one place.
But ultimately, the reason the Hunters Association was able to flourish wasn't because of government support. It was because it was led by Go Gunhee.
And now you know how he earned his title: the Heaven Beyond the Sky.
Although a part of him still longs to fight alongside the young hunters, he knew that as he took on the Atlas-like role of maintaining the Association, his place wasn't in the gates. So as he did before, Go Gunhee places the matters of the heart aside for the good of his institution.
