Dossier[]
He was Korea's eighth S-Rank hunter, but he moved to America after being recruited by the Scavenger Guild. He doesn't have a good relationship with Hwang Dongsuk, his older brother.
Dossier #01: A Bitter Goodbye[]
Korea's 8th S-Rank Hunter: Hwang Dongsoo.
He declined to join any of Korea's major guilds and chose America's Scavenger Guild instead. Citizens critcized him for abandoning the motherland as he left Korea.
The day he got on the plane for the USA, reporters gathered at the airport asked Hwang Dongsoo why he was leaving Korea. Hwang Dongsoo silently walked past them, then stopped in place, and stood in silence for a long time.
"Since I became an S-Rank hunter, I haven't gotten anything from the Korean Hunters Association..."
Hwang Dongsoo turned to go.
But first, he added "...excepted their rancid breath on my neck."
The public started making guesses and coming with imaginative theories of their own. S-Rank Hunters were very important resources, so it wasn't a surprise that the Hunters Association had been monitoring him. But there was more to it...
Dossier #02: Power and Responsibility[]
Dongsoo was one of the infamous "Hwang Brothers," along with his brother, Dongsuk.
They had countless cases of fraud, theft, and violence under their belts and on their rap sheets.
Awakening wasn't something that only happened to those without fault. Criminals went through awakening all the time. But it was a little different when they turned out to be an S-Rank hunter.
When a career criminal gained superhuman powers, there was a big risk of him using his power for personal gain.
Dongsoo saw the Hunters Association's concern over this and it made him furious. So he left Korea for the USA.
Dossier #03: Smoke and Mirrors[]
He asked his brother Dongsuk to come with him.
He convinced him that even though he was a C-Rank hunter, he would be able to join a major guild if he was with him. He insisted that they would be able to go to high-ranking gates together.
But Dongsuk declined. No one understood why.
It seemed that two brother had shared a strong bond. They went everywhere together.
But the appearance of "brotherly love" was a hollow sentiment. There was a chasm between them.
When did things go wrong?
Dongsoo had been stuck in his older brother's shadow since he was a little. His brother was the brains, so Dongsoo had to be the brawn.
When Dongsuk started to stray into darker business after their parents died, the shadow that covered Dongsoo grew even deeper.
The twisted desire to stand in front of his brother made Hwang Dongsoo commit more evil acts.
The two brother considered their criminal records to be medals of honor and lived a live competing over who could do worse.
Dossier #04: Spiteful Glee[]
When gates appeared and the number of awakened beings increased, Hwang Dongsoo still couldn't surpass Hwang Dongsuk.
Hwang Dongsuk was determined to be an awakened being, and when he became a C-Rank hunter,
Hwang Dongsoo congratulated him. But Hwang Dongsoo was in deep despair that he could not Awaken.
He felt no mana within him.
As an awakened being, Hwang Dongsuk suggested a new method to bring in more money, but Hwang Dongsoo was excluded from the operation because he couldn't enter gates. When his brother looked at him, he thought he saw a look of pity in his eyes.
Dongsoo exploded in anger.
He knew he couldn't enter a dungeon if he wasn't an awakened being, but he followed after his brother anyway.
When he stood in the place where his brother had disappeared within the gate, he felt some sort of power he had never felt before swirling within him.
It was a magnificent power
he couldn't describe it.
When he finally set foot inside a gate, Hwang Dongsoo finally realized he possessed power too.
On the day he was judged to be S-Rank with immeasurable mana,
he overcame his older brother for the first time.
He shivered in delight, and his hands balled into fists.
