Dossier #01: Bella Fisher

Being different than the people around you can be uncomfortable, but it can also be an adventure. When their inner colors clash withe everyone else's, most people don't like to let them show.

She was different.

Her name was Bella Fisher way before she even knew she might have another, so there was nothing strange about it.

As she grew, she learned a lot about herself. She was born overseas and wasn't related to her family by blood, but she didn't feel sad that the color of their eyes and hair were different than hers. No matter where she was born, she knew that had a loving family in America.

The year she turned 18, her parents gave her a note. It was a very old, and seemed to have been passed down through generations. She carefully unfolded it. There was an unfamiliar symbol drawn inside it- a name written in the ancient script of a distant country,

Learning what was written in that note took some doing. "Meilin". That was probably her original name.

Dossier #02: Foreigner

She kept thinking about the unfamiliar name... "Meilin".

Meilin, Meilin... The more she heard it, the better she felt. It sounded like a simple but peaceful melody. The once-unfamiliar sounding letters changed Bella's life forever.

It's no surprise that she was adventurous. She felt like she was always on a great quest because, even when she was growing up, people looked at her like a foreigner.

So she left for China to reconnect with her roots. She didn't have some grand dream of meeting who gave birth to her. It was simply wanderlust.

But sadly, she was an outsider, even in China. She looked like she belonged, but it was clear that she was fundamentally different. Her new neighbors looked at Meilin the same way her American neighbors had looked at Bella. Though she had been receiving looks from people as if she was an outsider all her life, this somehow felt different.

"Your room will always be here." Her parents had said as they said goodbye. But she knew she couldn't go back. She didn't want to give up. She was determined to make a life in the land where she was born.

Now, Meilin was an adult. An adult who had to prepare food for themselves, clean their own living room, and take responsibility for their own words and actions. That's why the letters her parents sent from America remained unopened. The moment her heart weakened, she feared she would return to feeling like a child again.

Dossier #03: New Family

One night, she came home after a long day of doing all the things adults have to do and don't want to do. The cold air felt espeically chilly. She saw an unfamiliar box in front of her house.

She spotted movement inside the loose cardboard. As she slowly approached and opened the flaps, a small, curled-up cat looked up at her.

She pondered. She could barely take care of herself. Would she be able to take care of another creature?

As if on cue, raindrops began to pour, followed by an even stronger wind. The cat in the box was startled and flinched. "I see," she thought. "So this is fate." Meilin carefully carried the box into her house.

"Berry." She spoke it softly when she saw the round pattern on his ears, and it quickly became the kitten's name.

Dossier #04: Going Through the Motions

"Berry, have you been waiting long?"

The fluffy cat mewed and rubbed his head against her hand. When he did, all the fatigue she'd built up over the day washed away in an instant.

Some time later, she was holding him quietly when Berry suddenly started breathing hard. He looked as though he was trying to let out a breath that was stuck. Then Berry spat out something dark- and it wasn't a hairball.

Meilin quickly took Berry to a nearby animal hospital. "Please save him. He's precious to me." She desperately wished for Berry to get well, but her wish didn't come true. And so they parted ways way too soon.

Meilin couldn't think about anything for several days. The little creature had been her only sanctuary in this unfamiliar place, and fate refused to tell her where she should turn now. She was stuck with the scattered toys, unused litter, and uneaten kibble left behind. For the first time, she felt truly out of place because time seemed to have stopped for her while the rest of the world moved on.

That's when it happened. Meilin felt an unfamiliar force wrapping around her body. When she held the power in her hand, it felt like it was taking shape. "A surge of power?" she thought. Of course. This was definitely an awakening.

She had heard it said that an awakening was a chance for a new life. That's why so many people hoped and wished to be awakened as a hunter.

When Berry's absence had consumed her, she awakened. She wondered... was this power a gift from Berry? "Berry... you must want me to get back on my feet as soon as possible, huh?'"

Meilin found new purpose in her life to fulfill Berry's wish. That's why, before entering any gate, Meilin always said, "I'll be back Berry."

Dossier #05: Meeting Again

Meilin awakened as a C-Rank hunter. Her rank wasn't amazing, but she certainly wasn't powerless.

She joined several raids to take her mind off her lost friend. She felt like she was going to fall apart if she didn't push herself.

Then one day, she entered a gate as usual and felt something unfamiliar. For some reason, she felt anxious. She wandered the dungeon for a while, but no magic beasts appeared.

The other hunters started to say "I think I've heard that some dungeons only have Essence Stones." People started to remark that they must be lucky, but Meilin still didn't think this quiet cave was absolutely safe.

It was then that something sharp grazed her arm. The sound of giggling filled the chamber. The red eyes of magic beasts zeroed in on everyone in the strike squad, including her.

"Help me!" someone cried. The hunters were helpless. Even with C-Rank and B-Rank hunters, carelessness makes the ranks meaningless. Fearful tears welled in her eyes. She was so scared of being unable to do anything. One by one, she felt people fall around her, laughter and chattering from moments ago gone as if it had never been.

"Help me." Meilin muttered quietly.

"You can do it, Meilin."

She heard a young, but powerful voice from somewhere.

"...Berry?" She quietly called the name of her dearest friend. Then, there was a splash of water in front of her and a small cat appeared.

That was definitely Berry. For some reason, she felt like she was stronger than before. She felt like she could take down any magic beasts in front of her.

Dossier #06: Eternal Companion

After Berry appeared arrived, many things changed, Dungeons became significantly easier to clear.

Her meager, fishing rod suddenly became the focus through which Berry was summoned. And though they hadn't been working together for very long, the two had the synchronicity of a long-time battle partners.

The terrible raid was turned around and ended with the boss defeated.

After clearing the gate, Meilin had her mana level measured again. She had been reawakened, from a C-Rank to an A-Rank. It was a shocking advancement.

After the incident, Meilin always summoned Berry and took him with her as much as her mana power allowed. She knew the summonsed beast wasn't really her cat, and he didn't have any emotions...

But...

"Berry."

The way he perked up his ears but refused to turn around when his name was called was exactly the same way Berry used to act.

Meilin slowly approached him and hugged him tightly.
"Let's stay together from now on, my precious Berry. My family."

Nothing gave her more strength as she journeyed forward into adulthood across the sea than having her friend by her side.
